How did you first hear about Serve Denton?

I first remember hearing about the idea many years ago, most likely during the campaign to fund the building project. Since then I have loosely been keeping up with Serve Denton and all of the good things it is involved with. The monthly volunteer opportunities newsletter is great email!

Tell us about your business and its community goals.

Denton legends, Bert Moore and Gene Gohlke, formed a partnership and started building swimming pools in and around Denton in the late 1950s. In 1963, they stopped building pools, but Gene continued operating Gohlke Pool Supply to offer supplies and service for those pools and others. In 1984, Gene’s son, Matt Gohlke, graduated from TCU and came back to work in the family business. In 1985, Gene and Matt formed a partnership, Gohlke Custom Pools, and resumed new pool construction. Gene has since retired and Matt continues the 60+ year tradition of offering great quality and service for both existing and future pool owners and any backyard enthusiasts in the Denton community. We certainly want to be part of the Denton and surrounding communities for another 60+ years by continuing that not-so-secret formula.

Why did you decide to become a Business Sponsor?

We should have done it a long time ago, but I heard Pat Smith speak at a 100 Dentonites Who Give a Damn meeting several months ago. I finally realized the impact that Serve Denton was able to make on the community being a “one-stop shop” for human services. I wanted to share that information with our staff, so several of us took a tour. We were blown away with the facility and the vision. We knew we had to get involved. Becoming a Business Sponsor is just the first step of that involvement which we hope will continue to grow throughout our organization.

What is your favorite thing about Denton?

Being a born and raised Dentonite, I have certainly seen things change in Denton over the last 40+ years. There are countless favorite places to visit, businesses to support, schools to cheer for, and great seats to watch it all go by in Denton. If I had to narrow it down to one thing, I would have to say it has to be the people. So many great people in and around Denton that I am happy to call my friends, neighbors, customers, coworkers, and even acquaintances. They are what truly makes Denton unique and a great place to be.

Anything else you want to add!

I guess this quote sums it up best, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” - Helen Keller
